Did you know, 1 out of 4 women experience pain in the pelvic region. The pelvis is involved in all daily activities: stability of the core, and bowel, bladder and sexual function. Men also experience pain in the pelvis, in fact at least 11% of men will experience chronic pelvic pain. Like women, the pelvis is an integral aspect of core stability and other daily functions: urination, bowel movements, and sexual function. Your Pace Yoga: Relieving Pelvic Pain focuses on down-training the nervous system and releasing the muscles that attach to the pelvis and hips. This video is recommended for:
- vulvar pain
- chronic nonbacterial prostatitis
- pudendal neuralgia
- bladder pain
- urinary urgency/frequency
- irritable bowel syndrome
- other pain associated with pelvic floor dysfunction
Yoga calms the flight or flight response by decreasing the overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. Because pain is an output of the nervous system, retraining the brain is crucial. The use of pranayama, or breath work, is particularly helpful here.
It increases the pliability of muscles and connective tissue, increasing flexibility in the myofascial attachments to the pelvis. This allows the nerves to have the space they need to slide, glide, and not get irritated.
Yoga also helps people discover a pain-free range of motion by increasing body awareness. It is crucial for us to reprogram the brain to change the imprint that movement will be scary or painful.
Lastly, it helps integrate the mind, body and spirit. People who experience chronic pain often disassociate from the body part that is disrupting their life. A yoga practice helps renew the relationship with the physical body.
This DVD was created by Dustienne Miller, a board certified women’s health physical therapist and Kripalu Yoga teacher. This yoga home program was specifically designed for men and women who are healing chronic pelvic pain. The DVD weaves together breath work, meditation, body awareness, and gentle yoga postures. This stress relieving program can be practiced in as little as 20 minutes, making it possible to fit into daily life.
