What is a Gellhorn Pessary?

A Gellhorn pessary is a medical device used in gynecology to manage certain conditions, primarily uterine prolapse. Uterine prolapse occurs when the uterus descends from its normal position and can sometimes protrude into the vaginal canal. A pessary is a removable device inserted into the vagina to provide structural support for the uterus and help alleviate the symptoms associated with uterine prolapse, such as pelvic pressure, discomfort, and urinary incontinence.

The Gellhorn pessary is named after its inventor, Dr. H. Gellhorn. It is a specific type of pessary characterized by its shape, which resembles a flattened, ring-like structure with a central knob or handle. The Gellhorn pessary is designed to be self-retaining, meaning it stays in place within the vagina without external support or attachment.

What is a Fitting Kit?

Gellhorn pessaries are available in various sizes. A healthcare provider will select the appropriate size based on the patient’s anatomy and the severity of the uterine prolapse. A fitting kit is used to test the appropriate size for each patient.  Proper fitting and regular check-ups with a healthcare provider are essential to ensure the pessary remains effective and comfortable for the patient.

Pessaries like the Gellhorn pessary are considered a conservative, non-surgical treatment option for uterine prolapse and other pelvic organ prolapse conditions. They can be a suitable choice for women who wish to avoid surgery or who are not surgical candidates. However, it’s important for patients using a pessary to follow up with their healthcare provider regularly for maintenance, adjustments, and monitoring of their condition.
